Characteristic and Peculiar Symptoms of Bryonia Alba

1. All complaints < on motion.

2. Dryness of mucous membranes generally (lips, mouth, stomach, wants drink in large quantities, at long intervals; intestines, dry hard stools as if burnt).

3. Effusions in serous membranes (meninges, pleura, peritoneum, etc.).

4. Constipation (no desire) or diarrhoea, < mornings on beginning to move.

5. Stitching pains, especially in serous membranes and joints.

6. Sitting up causes nausea and faintness.

7. Modalities: < from motions, warm weather after cold, from touch (from Dunham; editor); > from quiet, lying on painful side or part (amelioration from pressure).

8. Suitable to dry, spare, nervous, slender persons, of irritable disposition; rheumatic tendency. Complaints in hot weather, or exposure to dry, cold air, in wet weather (Rhus tox.).

9. Cough, dry, hard, racking, with scanty expectoration; with splitting headache; delirium, about the business of the day; (typhoid) headache; < stooping; ironing; hot weather; coughing; motion, vertigo; with nausea, and faintness; < from sitting up after lying down. Pressure, as from a stone, at pit of stomach, relieved by eructation.

10. Vicarious menstruation; nose bleeds when menses should appear (Phos.).

11. Mammae heavy, of a stony hardness; pale, but hard; hot and painful.

12. Rheumatism of joints; with pale swelling, great pain, worse on touch or least motion.

13. Joints red, swelling, stiff, with stiching pain from slightest motion.

14. The gastric derangements often occur as a result of dietetic errors, especially when warm weather sets in after cold.

15. Frequent desire to take long breath; must expand the lungs. (Cactus, Ignatia, Nat. sulph.)

16. Cough dry, < after eating, sometimes with vomiting; < moving; < coming from open air into warm room. (Nat. carb.)

17. Cough hurts head and chest, holds them with hands. (Eupatorium perf., Natrum sulph.)

18. Delirium, about the business of the day.

19. Vertigo; with nausea, and faintness; < from sitting up after lying down.

20. Pressure, as from a stone, at pit of stomach, relieved by eructation.

21. (Typhoid) headache; < stooping; ironing; hot weather; coughing; motion, vertigo.

22. Cough, dry, hard, racking, with scanty expectoration; with splitting headache.

23. Sticking, jerking, throbbing headache from the forehead backward to the occiput. (From Dunham; editor)

24. Cough is generally dry; it seems to come from the region of the stomach, and is preceded by a crawling and tickling sensation in the epigastrium. (From Dunham; editor)

25. Nose-bleed occur in patients, especially in the night, 3 to 4 A.M. (From Clarke; editor)

28. The patient desires things to eat which cannot be had; or are refused if offered. (From Clarke; editor)

29. In fever cases there is often a stupid, drowsy condition; or mild delirium, in which the patient has the delusion that he is somewhere else and "wants to go home." (From Clarke; editor)

30. Mind: Very irritable, inclined to be angry; chilly, or a red face and heat in the head.

31. Head: Headache from washing himself in cold water, when the face was sweating; in such cases opening the eyelids increases the headache.

32. Sight and Eyes: Soreness and aching, or pressing crushing pain in eyes, worse on motion.

33. Nose: Epistaxis in the morning after rising (movement), after being over-heated; vicarious menstruation.

34. Mouth and Throat: Great dryness of mouth and tongue; lips parched and dry.

35. Stomach: Very thirsty for cold water; large quantities at a time; lips parched and dry.

36. Stomach: Longing for warm drink and > by it.

37. Stomach: Desire for things which cannot be had, or are refused, or not wanted when offered.

38. Stomach: Nausea and faintness when sitting up from lying down.

39. Anus and Stool: Constipation; stools large, hard, and dry as if burnt.

40. Anus and Stool: Diarrhoea putrid, smelling like old cheese,< (or only) in the morning, on motion and in hot weather.

41. Female Sexual Organs: Frequent bleeding from the nose from suppressed or retarded menses.

42. Female Sexual Organs: Mammae heavy, of a stony hardness; pale but hard; hot and painful; must support the breasts.

43. Respiratory Organs: Intense sticking, or sticking pains in chest; cannot bear to move or draw a deep breath.

44. Respiratory Organs: Patient feels as though he must take a long breath, but cannot as the chest will not expand sufficiently, or there is pain in the attempt.

45. Respiratory Organs: Coming to warm room from cold air < cough.

46. Respiratory Organs: Cough < after eating or drinking, with vomiting of ingesta.

47. Extremities: Joints red, swelling, stiff, with stitching pains from slightest motion.

48. Chill, Fever and Sweat: Free sweat but the pains keep the patient still.

49. Skin: Pricking sensation in skin is very characteristic. (Guernsey.)

50. Skin: Slow development of rash in eruptive fevers, or sudden receding of rash, causing respiratory or meningeal troubles or dropsy.

51. Generalities: Joints red, swollen, stiff, with sticking pains, < from slightest motion.

52. Generalities: Sensation in bed as if she was sinking deep down.

53. Generalities: Dropsical swellings increase during the day and diminish at night.

54. Generalities: Rheumatic and gouty tension; drawing, tearing, and sticking, mostly in the limbs, especially when moving the parts, with intolerance of contact.

55. Causes and Modalities: The great characteristic is aggravation from motion.

56. Causes and Modalities: Complaints when warm weather sets in after cold.

57. Causes and Modalities: Complaints from ironing or working over hot stove.
